Professor Akintayo Adedoyin obtained his BSc in Physics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1974; and a PhD, specialising in Meteorology, from the same university in 1983 He started his teaching career at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria, and had a stint as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Reading, U.K., before joining the staff of the University of Botswana, Botswana, in 1992 where he is currently a Professor of Atmospheric Physics.

In recognition of his contributions to research in Atmospheric Physics, he was appointed Senior Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, from 1994-99; Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the U.K. Royal Meteorological Society; 2012 Senior Fellow of the C. V. Raman International Fellowship for African Researchers and cited in 1998 by the Edward Bouchet-Abdus Salam Institute (EBASI) for distinguished service. He has also served as a Lead Author, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN) and Lead Author for IPCC Working Group 1 on Assessment Report 5.

Professionally, he has had a distinguished career being one of the few Africans, working in Africa, who have studied tropospheric dynamics over tropical Africa.  He has well over seventy publications to his credit in academic journals including high-profile conference proceedings.

He was the General Secretary (1988-2010) of the Society of African Physicists and Mathematicians (SAPAM) until the society transformed to the African Physical Society in January 2010. SAPAM is one of the first few physical societies that was granted Observer Status by the then Organisation of African Unity (now African Union).
