Asfawossen Asrat Kassaye is Professor of Geology at the School of Earth Sciences, Addis Ababa University (AAU). Asfawossen does research in Petrology, Geochemistry, Paleoclimatology, Geoarchaeology, Geoheritage, and Applied Geology. His current projects include ‘Speleothem Palaeoclimatology’, ‘Historical Climatology’, ‘Cave Geoarchaeology’, ‘Paleo-Lakes and Hominin Sites’, ‘Geoheritage, Geodiversity and Geoconservation’ and ‘Harmonization of the Geological maps of Ethiopia’. In addition to his teaching, supervision of graduate students and research activities, he served as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, as Academic Programs Officer and as Research Director at AAU (2005-2009); as Vice President of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) (2008-2016); and President of the Eastern African Quaternary Research Association (EAQUA) (2012-2017). He served as Associate Editor of the Journal “Quaternary International”, and is in the editorial board of the “Annals of Geomorphology”, and “Geoheritage”. He is recipient of several scientific grants and has extensively published in high impact journals. He also published a popular science book on “Geotourism in Ethiopia”. He is a fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS) and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), and was a Young Affiliate of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and a fellow of the Wissenschftskolleg Zu Berlin. He currently serves as member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Past Global Changes (PAGES), the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, and the Governing Board of the African Network of Earth Sciences Institutions (ANESI). He has been a visiting fellow at the University of Birmingham and University of Cambridge, UK; University of Cologne, Germany; the Institute of Human Evolution, France. He has an extensive network of collaborators in Africa and elsewhere and has organized and hosted more than 15 International conferences and workshops in Ethiopia and has participated and presented his research in close to 60 international scientific meetings in 35 different countries. Asfawossen also occasionally writes for popular science magazines and has featured in Earth Sciences related documentary movies.
