The NEF is more than a conference; it’s a movement to advance African scientific discovery and innovation.
The first NEF Global Gathering will be hosted by H.E. President Macky Sall in Dakar, Senegal from the 8-10 March, 2016. The three-day NEF Global Gathering will showcase often underreported scientific progress in Africa, holding up the NEF Fellows as examples of the exceptional scientific potential and progress across Africa.
A global science and technology forum on African soil where we talk collaboration, innovation, solutions.
Held every two years, NEF Global Gatherings will unite more than 500 of the brightest thinkers and distinguished stakeholders from around the world. NEF Global Gatherings showcase 15 of Africa’s top young scientists and connect them with leaders from Africa and the rest of the world in high-profile, invitation-only forums. These leading scientists, policymakers, business people, journalists, civil-society representatives and entrepreneurs will highlight breakthrough discoveries and catalyse scientific collaboration for human development.
By bringing the world to Africa, the NEF will issue a strong call for business investment in African science and government policies that fuel research and innovation. Global leaders will look at issues that can be advanced by frontier science like infrastructure, STEM potential and scientific entrepreneurship. Participants will also have focused discussions that will move from policy to practice.
Unique to the Global Gathering, 50 percent of participants will be young (under age 42) representing all countries in Africa. At least 40 percent of attendees will be women and the Global Gathering aims to feature 50 percent participants from Africa and 50 percent from the rest of the world. In addition, the conference languages will be English and French, with simultaneous translation throughout.
Participants of the NEF will include:
- Leaders, thought leaders and policymakers, including representatives from regional and international organizations
- Industry and multinational corporations, including companies that are looking to invest in scientific research and commercializing discoveries
- Scientists and researchers, including international scientists and African researchers in the science, technology and social science disciplines
- Young leaders of tomorrow, from Africa and around the world
- Civil society representatives
The Global Gathering will also have exciting workshops on publishing, communicating science and how to get research funding.
