Kenya’s National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) is funding research on drought tolerant maize that will be ideal for the arid and semi-arid lands occupying 70 percent of the country.
NACOSTI have already availed KShs 6 million ($71,000 ) for research at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). The research, using molecular biology techniques including gene silencing, is being conducted at the university’s Institute of Biotechnology Research.
