Dr. Mariamawit Y Yeshak is a pharmacognosist. She studies natural products with medicinal value. She is a founding fellow and vice chair of the Ethiopian Young Academy of Sciences (EtYAS). Mariamawit got her B.Pharm and M.Sc degrees from Addis Ababa University (AAU) and did her PhD studies at Uppsala University (UU).
Currently, she is an Assistant Professor and the Chairperson at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, AAU. Mariamawit leads a project called Bioactive Metabolites for Improving life (BaSIL) funded by the International Science Program, UU, Sweden. BaSIL aims in identifying active molecules/herbal fractions and uses the untapped knowledge in Ethiopian traditional medicine and the rich flora of the country as fertile grounds for the project. Mariamawit is one of the twenty inaugural fellows of the Africa Science Leadership Program.
